Dictation

On phones and tablets you can dictate text directly into the editor instead of typing.

Dictating

In the mobile editor toolbar, open the character group and tap the microphone button labelled Dictate. The app starts listening (the mic icon pulses); speak, then tap Stop dictation to insert what you said at the cursor. You can dictate into any element — action, dialogue, a scene heading, and so on.

The in-app Dictate button belongs to the mobile web app; in the native iOS and Android apps, the keyboard's own microphone key does the same job, so a second button isn't shown. Dictation uses your device or browser's built-in speech recognition, and can fall back to AI transcription when that isn't available — the fallback runs through the Voice & dictation task in Settings → AI.

Language

Dictation follows your script's document language (Settings → File → Language) when one is set, otherwise your app language. Set the document language first if you're dictating in something other than your interface language.

Permissions

The first time you dictate, your device asks for microphone access (and speech-recognition permission on mobile). If dictation isn't available — no microphone permission, or the device has no speech recognition and no AI transcription is configured — the button shows Dictation unavailable.

  • Languages — set the language dictation listens for.
  • AI Setup — configures the transcription fallback used on the web.
  • Read Aloud — the other direction: text to speech.
